Vermont's Ecosystem
Vermont is home to a remarkably rich ecosystem of people and projects reimagining what resilient local economies can look like. Across the state, farmers, cooperatives, educators, land stewards, and community organizers are building practical models rooted in regenerative agriculture, food sovereignty, cooperative economics, ecological restoration, and mutual support. From working farms and seed networks to community food systems and educational hubs, these initiatives are helping shape a more connected and resilient future.
At Forest of Life Farm, we believe meaningful change begins close to home. Our work is grounded in place-based action, deep curiosity, and the idea that becoming more radically local can strengthen community health, ecological stewardship, and regional economies. Through local products, hands-on classes, collaborative networks, and shared learning spaces, we support agroecology, community resilience, and what we think of as “social mycelium” — the living web of relationships that allows communities to thrive.
This page highlights inspiring initiatives, experiments, and enterprises from across our bioregion — projects that are cultivating not only food, but also knowledge, connection, and new ways of living together. If there’s a farm, organization, or community effort in your town that aligns with this vision, we’d love to hear about it.
We also host webinars, gatherings, and networking events designed to connect people working toward more regenerative and locally rooted futures. If your work intersects with these ideas, please reach out. We’re always looking to build new relationships, share knowledge, and weave stronger connections across the region.

Regional Focus Partners
The Vermont Farmers Food Center began as a grassroots, volunteer-led initiative and has grown into a regional hub for local food, agricultural infrastructure, and community resilience in Rutland. Through food access programs, farmer support, education, workforce development, and shared-use facilities, VFFC is helping strengthen the local food economy while increasing access to healthy, locally produced food. Programs such as the Farmacy Project, FABEL youth education initiative, winter farmers market, and statewide food access partnerships reflect VFFC’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, economic opportunity, and community wellbeing.

The Work That Reconnects (WTR) was created in the late 70’s by root teacher Joanna Macy and many colleagues. It has since evolved through the contributions of dozens of facilitators and practitioners around the world. To learn more please check here.
